Data roaming and a Philippines eSIM: which switch goes where

  • Off at home
  • On for the eSIM only if needed
  • Prepaid: no extra charges

The short answer

Your home line keeps data roaming off, so no charge from your carrier can follow. For the eSIM line, the store asks for that switch only when nothing connects. Its plans are prepaid and never auto-renew, so the switch cannot add a charge on the eSIM.

Why it can matter

A line counts as roaming when it sits on a network other than its own home network. The answer depends on your plan, and every plan states its network before payment. The store’s rule stays short: when the eSIM line will not connect, that line gets data roaming switched on.

Where the switches are

The iPhone path: Settings, Cellular (or Mobile Service), pick the line, then Data Roaming. The Android path: the SIM settings, pick the line, then Roaming. Run the same check on your home line, where it stays off.

If it fails (Data roaming)

When signal shows but data does not, confirm the eSIM line carries mobile data, then switch data roaming on for it. Then follow not connecting.

Questions

Does my home line need data roaming switched on?

It does not. Leaving it off keeps roaming charges from your carrier away. Calls and texts still reach your own number.

In which case does the eSIM line need data roaming on?

Only when the rest of the checks end with no connection. For a line that will not start, the store asks for that switch.
