Manila eSIM: online from NAIA to the city

Manila sits in Metro Manila, the National Capital Region, and keeps the historic walled city of Intramuros, with Fort Santiago, Casa Manila and the Manila Cathedral among the most visited sites. With the eSIM on from NAIA, the first ride into the city starts on the map.

  • Intramuros, the walled city
  • LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3
  • NAIA, south of the city

The short answer

A Manila eSIM is installed at home before you fly and switched on when you land, with data roaming on for the line. Ninoy Aquino International (MNL) sits south of the city, and the operator lists metered taxis with a dispatch slip to keep, Grab pickup bays and UBE Express and Genesis point-to-point buses.

Where the signal holds

  • Three networks

    The Philippines' three networks

Globe, Smart and DITO run the Philippines' mobile networks, and each keeps a coverage check on its own pages; check the places you are going before you travel.

  • Not measured

    Inside the walls and museums

We have not measured signal inside Intramuros' walls, in the museums or along the rail lines. Download your tickets and a map before you set out.

  • Data roaming on

    Your eSIM

The eSIM runs on a Philippine network and shows that network's name in your phone's settings. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereNinoy Aquino International (MNL) sits south of central Manila, reached via EDSA and the NAIA Expressway, as the operator's transport page sets out. That page lists metered taxis with a dispatch slip to keep, Grab pickup bays and UBE Express and Genesis point-to-point buses; Grab estimates the city centre about 10 km away, a trip of around 40 minutes.
  2. Getting aroundThe Light Rail Transit Authority's pages set out two light rail lines: LRT Line 1, an elevated line that serves 25 active stations between Fernando Poe Jr. in Quezon City and Dr. Santos in the south, following Taft Avenue past the Central Terminal and then Rizal Avenue, and LRT Line 2, the Megatren, 17.6 km from Antipolo to Recto through 13 stations; MRT-3 runs its service along EDSA under the Department of Transportation. Grab's own page covers pickups at NAIA for the ride in.
  3. PayingThe currency is the Philippine peso (PHP). The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the country's central bank, says it has the exclusive power and authority to issue the coins and notes for circulation in the Philippines, and its site publishes a daily reference exchange rate bulletin. Check that bulletin before changing money at a bank or money changer in town.
  4. When to goPAGASA, the national weather service, divides the country's year into a rainy season from June to November and a dry season from December to May, the dry months splitting into a cool dry season from December to February and a hot, dry one from March to May. Check its forecasts before you travel.

Before you go (Manila)

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and keep the line switched off until you land. Download offline maps and your tickets while you still have Wi-Fi, in case the walled city or the rail lines have no signal. On arrival, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
