Palawan eSIM: online across the province's towns and islands

Palawan is a province of mainland and islands: eleven of its municipalities sit on the mainland and twelve across the islands, El Nido and Coron among them, and the Underground River runs through limestone karst about 76 km north-west of Puerto Princesa. With the eSIM on, the river cruise between the limestone walls starts on the map.

The short answer

A Palawan eSIM is installed at home before you fly and switched on when you land, with data roaming on for the line. The Underground River, about 8.2 km of limestone karst inside a national park, is a World Heritage Site, and El Nido and Coron are among the province's municipalities.

Where the signal holds

  • Three networks

    The Philippines' three networks

Globe, Smart and DITO run the Philippines' mobile networks, and each keeps a coverage check on its own pages; check the places you are going before you travel.

  • Not measured

In the cave and on the water

We have not measured signal inside the cave, on the river cruise or across the islands. Download your tickets and a map before you set out.

  • Data roaming on

    Your eSIM

The eSIM runs on a Philippine network and shows that network's name in your phone's settings. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereThe park sits on the mid-western coast of Palawan, about 76 km north-west of Puerto Princesa, the World Heritage listing sets out, with its ownership placed with the City Government of Puerto Princesa. The province's pages count 23 municipalities and one independent city, eleven on the mainland and twelve across the islands.
  2. Getting aroundThe underground river is seen by boat: the listing describes river cruises up to 4.5 km inland, past chambers as much as 120 m wide and 60 m high, with a limit of 600 visitors a day. El Nido and Coron stand among the municipalities the province lists for its coasts and islands.
  3. PayingThe currency is the Philippine peso (PHP). The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the country's central bank, says it has the exclusive power and authority to issue the coins and notes for circulation in the Philippines, and its site publishes a daily reference exchange rate bulletin. Check that bulletin before changing money at a bank or money changer in town.
  4. When to goPAGASA, the national weather service, divides the country's year into a rainy season from June to November and a dry season from December to May, the dry months splitting into a cool dry season from December to February and a hot, dry one from March to May. Check its forecasts before you travel.

Before you go (Palawan)

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and keep the line switched off until you land. Download offline maps and your tickets while you still have Wi-Fi, in case the river or the islands have no signal. On arrival, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
