Cebu eSIM: online from Mactan across the island

Cebu's own pages call the province the country's oldest, a hub of history, culture, trade and tourism, and its tourism pages place the first permanent Spanish settlement, founded in 1565, in Cebu City, with Mactan Island and its airport across the strait. With the eSIM on from Mactan, the ride into the city starts on the map.

  • Cebu City and Mactan Island
  • MyBus to SM City Cebu
  • Ferries from the city's piers

The short answer

A Cebu eSIM is installed at home before you fly and switched on when you land, with data roaming on for the line. Mactan-Cebu International (CEB) stands on Mactan Island, and the airport's transport guide lists the MyBus to SM City Cebu and a modern jeepney route that runs around the clock.

Where the signal holds

  • Three networks

    The Philippines' three networks

Globe, Smart and DITO run the Philippines' mobile networks, and each keeps a coverage check on its own pages; check the places you are going before you travel.

  • Not measured

    On the coasts and crossings

We have not measured signal on the ferry crossings, along the coast roads or in the heritage towns. Download your maps and your tickets before you set out.

  • Data roaming on

    Your eSIM

The eSIM runs on a Philippine network and shows that network's name in your phone's settings. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereMactan-Cebu International (CEB) stands on Mactan Island in Lapu-Lapu. The airport's transport guide sets out the MyBus route, from SM City Cebu through Parkmall to the airport and back, with fares of about 30 to 50 pesos and service from 6:00 to 21:00 towards the airport and 7:00 to 22:00 back, and modern jeepneys from the Lapu-Lapu City public market to both terminals, around the clock. Grab estimates Cebu City about 15 km away, a trip of 35 to 50 minutes.
  2. Getting aroundThe airport's transport guide lists the modern jeepney route from the Lapu-Lapu City public market to both terminals, and ferries cross from Cebu City's piers: OceanJet's own site lists Cebu to Tagbilaran, Ormoc, Palompon and Siquijor among its popular routes and keeps its main office at Pier 4. Along the coasts, the province's tourism pages point south to the whale sharks of Oslob and north to the waters of Bantayan, across more than 500 kilometres of coastline and 167 islands and cays.
  3. PayingThe currency is the Philippine peso (PHP). The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the country's central bank, says it has the exclusive power and authority to issue the coins and notes for circulation in the Philippines, and its site publishes a daily reference exchange rate bulletin. Check that bulletin before changing money at a bank or money changer in town.
  4. When to goPAGASA, the national weather service, divides the country's year into a rainy season from June to November and a dry season from December to May, the dry months splitting into a cool dry season from December to February and a hot, dry one from March to May; the Sinulog festival fills Cebu City in January, and the Tourism Promotions Board's calendar lists it for 15 January or every second Sunday of January. Check PAGASA's forecasts before you travel.

Before you go (Cebu)

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and keep the line switched off until you land. Download offline maps and your tickets while you still have Wi-Fi, in case a ferry crossing or a coast road has no signal. On arrival, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
