Will my phone take an eSIM? Find out before buying

  • Dial *#06#
  • Look for an EID
  • Unlocked phones only

The short answer

Dial *#06#: an EID on the screen means your phone can hold an eSIM. The handset also has to be unlocked, free of ties to the carrier that sold it. Most iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao ship without eSIM support.

Does my phone support eSIM?

The makers' own lists

A working eSIM is not refunded because a phone cannot install it, so check your phone before you buy.

If your phone is not on the list

Where the list leaves your model out, dial *#06#. An EID on that screen confirms the phone carries an eSIM. If it shows only IMEI numbers, it does not. For the last word, go by the makers’ own lists linked above.

Carrier lock

A handset still locked to the carrier that sold it refuses any other eSIM. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

Before you buy

A working eSIM does not qualify for a refund just because the phone cannot install it. Check your phone first.
